What is Fairtrade
Fairtrade strengthens the position of farmers and workers in the value chain. By offering an alternative approach to trade, Fairtrade supports producers in securing better deals, contributing to greater sustainable development in Africa.
Fairtrade certified producers receive a fair price, protecting them against unstable markets. On top of the minimum price, Fairtrade farmers and workers receive the Fairtrade Premium, which they invest in socio-economic and environmental projects.
Fairtrade promotes longer-term trading relationships so that producers can better plan their futures. Traders further support farmers and workers in Africa by pre-financing production activities during periods when production finance is most required – often harvesting time.
By buying products with the FAIRTRADE Mark consumers are given the opportunity to improve the livelihoods of farmers and workers in Africa. Shoppers also consume more sustainably as Fairtrade supports producers in their battle against climate change.
